Vasectomy Recovery: It’s Faster and Easier Than You Think

When it comes to permanent sterilization, there really couldn’t be anything easier or faster than a vasectomy. All it takes is two small punctures — one in each testicle — to sever and seal your vas deferens tubes forever.
While the idea of punctures in your scrotum may make you squirm, we can assure you that the reality of the procedure is a lot easier (and less painful) than you believe. Once it’s done, you’ve recovered, and the waiting period’s over, you never have to worry about an unwanted pregnancy again.
Our experienced and skilled urologist, Alex Lesani, MD, specializes in no-scalpel vasectomies. He performs this simple, safe procedure in the safety and comfort of our Las Vegas, Nevada, office.
What is vasectomy recovery in Las Vegas really like? Below is a rundown.
First, you’re sore
As with any medical procedure that breaks the skin, you’re a little sore after your 15-minute no-scalpel vasectomy. During the procedure itself, you shouldn’t feel anything other than pressure as Dr. Lesani creates the small punctures through which he severs and closes your vas deferens.
When the anesthetic wears off, you can switch to over-the-counter painkillers. You can also hold wrapped ice packs to the operation site to subdue any swelling or pain for about 20 minutes at a time, throughout the first couple of days.
You get to take a break
You may normally charge from one activity to another, speeding through work days, work outs, and time with family and friends. But after your vasectomy, your boys need time to chill. The best next step is to have someone drive you home so you can start your recovery.
We don’t recommend that you go to work, do household chores, or go to the gym for several days, at least. You may be able to work remotely, from home, if it’s not too stressful. It’s best to sit or lie down with your feet elevated for the first 2-3 days.
Ask your partner to do the heavy lifting. Literally, or get outside help from friends, family, or a paid caretaker.
When you’re ready (usually after three days), take short walks. Walking helps you heal, as long as you’re not too sore. Other than strenuous activity, you should be able to return to most of your everyday tasks after 48-72 hours.
However, hold off on the heavy lifting and other intense workouts for just a bit longer. Biking, power lifting, martial arts, and other activities should be put on the back burner for at least a month.
You can’t take a bath
Your 3rd-grade self would love this one: After your vasectomy, you need to stay out of bathtubs until you heal. Spas and saunas are also a no-no. Unfortunately, so are swimming pools.
You can shower with warm (not hot) water, though. Just be gentle, down there.
You wear tightie-whities
Boxers don’t give your boys enough support after a vasectomy, so you have to wear briefs instead. You might also opt for a jock strap.
And don’t worry about your new underwear choice affecting your love life: You can’t have one, for a little while.
Wait for it …
You have to put off sex and even masturbation for two weeks. Your body needs that time to heal.
Once you’re able to ejaculate safely, you have to wear condoms when you’re with a partner. It takes up to 30 ejaculations and about three months to clear any residual sperm that may be hanging out in the vas deferens or urethra.
As part of your follow-up appointments, Dr. Lesani conducts sperm counts after you’ve healed enough to ejaculate. Once you reach a 0 sperm count, he gives you the OK to have intercourse without birth control. If you’re not in a committed, monogamous relationship, however, you should still use condoms to protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
After a month, you’re home free (mostly)
So, there you go. A few days of soreness, a few weeks of behavior modifications, and your recovery is complete.
A vasectomy is 99% effective against pregnancy. Although it’s rare, about 15 in 10,000 couples get pregnant in the 12 months after a vasectomy. The only 100% guaranteed method of birth control is abstinence. And you don’t want that.
